WARSAW: President Gen Pervez Musharraf and his Polish counterpart Lech Kaczynski expressed their complete satisfaction over their broad-based interaction on Monday and said they looked forward to enhancing ties between the two countries in various fields of common interest including defence production.

Addressing a joint news conference in Warsaw, the two leaders termed their wide-ranging talks very fruitful. The two sides discussed investment opportunities, interaction in the field of education and cultural exchanges.

President Musharraf said Pakistan holds Poland in the highest esteem because of its performance in political and economic fields and its present position in the European Union. He said he had come to Poland with a broad-based agenda for improving bilateral relations. He said historically the two countries had old ties and in 1940 Karachi had hosted over 30,000 Polish refugees and a Polish officer had served in the Pakistan Air Force in the 1960s.

President Musharraf also expressed the Pakistani nation’s gratitude for all the help and assistance Poland had provided to those affected by the October 2005 earthquake. The Polish president said the two leaders had very interesting and fruitful talks that covered issues of mutual interest and several major problems of the contemporary world. He said Pakistan, because of its geographical location and its size, has an important role in global issues. President Kaczynski said Poland, as a member of NATO and the European Union, is also involved in important matters. “Pakistan and Poland will continue talks on such matters and the visit of President Pervez Musharraf has been extremely satisfactory,” he said. He said there were significant opportunities for development of relations between Pakistan and Poland in the economic and trade spheres as well as for cooperation in defence, political and cultural fields.

The Polish leader said he was convinced that the five agreements and MoUs signed by the two countries for cooperation of defence, small and medium-sized enterprises, education, science and culture would lead to a deepening of relations. President Musharraf also held a meeting with Polish Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski. The talks covered wide-ranging matters of bilateral interest, APP reported.

The Polish prime minister pledged that his country, as a member of the European Union, would ensure that there was no discrimination against Pakistan. He said his government would encourage private investors to invest in Pakistan in food processing and oil and gas exploration. He appreciated Pakistan’s role in the fight against terrorism.

President Musharraf also laid a wreath of flowers at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier to pay tribute to the sacrifices of the Polish army during the Second World War. He also addressed a gathering of citizens. Earlier, the president presided over an investiture ceremony, where he awarded special medals and certificates to 20 Polish citizens who had participated in the relief operations in Pakistan after the earthquake disaster in 2005. He lauded their humanitarian spirit and special gesture of goodwill towards the people of Pakistan in their time of need.

President Musharraf was accompanied by Federal Ministers Rao Sikandar Iqbal, Khurshid Mahmood Kasuri, Lt Gen (r) Javed Asharf Qazi, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Humayun Akhtar, Minister of State Tariq Azeem, Sindh Minister Saeeda Malik and senators Ammar Ahmad Khan and Razina Alam Khan.
