Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar said on Sunday that the government spent more than Rs250 billion from its budget to procure Covid-19 vaccines in 2021, Aaj News reported.

While addressing a press conference in Karachi, the minister said that the government did not wait for provinces to set aside a budget for procurement and used its own to purchase vaccines as soon as possible.

“We did not let politics affect our handling of coronavirus and distributed the Covid vaccine among provinces without any political discrimination or prejudice,” Asad said.

As a result, the government successfully met its target, which was set in May last year, to fully immunise 71.5 million people by the end of 2021, he added.

Responding to a tweet by a PPP leader saying Sindh was unable to procure vaccines as per law, the minister said there was not any law that stopped any province from purchasing vaccines.

Earlier on Sunday, the minister had urged people to show caution and follow standard operation procedures (SOPs) against the coronavirus, as another wave of Covid-19 was in the offing.

In a tweet, Umar, who also heads the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), said that “Genome sequencing shows a rising proportion of Omicron cases particularly in Karachi.”

Sindh's private schools told to ensure vaccination of all staff, students aged 12 and above

The Sindh government has directed private schools in the province to ensure the complete vaccination of all teaching and non-teaching staff and students aged 12 and above against Covid-19.

According to a notification issued by the Sindh education department's Directorate of Inspection and Registration of Private Institutions, schools are obliged to ensure the vaccination of all of their staff and students between the ages of 12 and 18 as per the guidelines issued by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).

Keeping in view the NCOC's instructions, the provincial health department has also directed private schools' administrations to collect copies of vaccination cards from their staff members, the notification said.

It added that action would be taken against a school's administration if any student above the age of 12 or a staff member was found unvaccinated during the course of inspection/visit by the administrative team.

Pakistan on Wednesday reported over 2,000 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours in the highest daily tally since September 23 as the highly transmissible Omicron variant spread across the country.

A total of 2,074 new cases were recorded in the last 24 hours compared to 2,233 recorded on Sept 23.

Moreover, fatalities also rose to double digits for the first time since December 21 when 10 deaths were confirmed.

According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), the positivity rate increased to 4.7 per cent. The number of active cases rose to over 20,000 while 628 patients were in critical care.

The countrywide breakdown during the last 24 hours:
  • Sindh: 1,402 cases, 9 deaths
  • Punjab: 445 cases, 2 deaths
  • Islamabad: 165 cases
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 52 cases, 2 deaths
  • Azad Jammu and Kashmir: 7 cases
  • Balochistan: 3 cases
Gilgit-Baltistan did not confirm any new infections or deaths.

NCOC data also showed a worrying increase in city-wise positivity rates. Karachi, which is emerging as the epicentre during the current wave, recorded a positivity rate of 20.22pc, followed by Mirpur at 10pc. The positivity rate in Lahore was recorded at 7.15pc while Islamabad and Rawalpindi's were 4.56pc and 4.06pc, respectively.
The rise in cases is being driven by the Omicron variant of the coronavirus which has brought a fifth wave of the disease to the country.

Vaccinations

A day earlier, Pakistan passed the milestone of administering at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine to over 100 million people.
“Of these [100m people], nearly 75m are fully vaccinated, which is 33pc of total population and 49pc of eligible population. Work is not complete yet. Need to keep the momentum going,” an NCOC statement had stated.
Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar had announced the achievement and asked the masses to get themselves vaccinated at the earliest.

Karachi lagging in vaccination effort
Karachi is lagging in the vaccination effort, however, as it emerged on Tuesday that over 40pc of the population was still waiting for their first dose of vaccine. According to health department officials, the vaccination target was not being met as planned and 90pc of the patients currently being treated in the Covid-19 wards were unvaccinated.
Realising the growing number of Covid cases, Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho chaired a meeting on Tuesday to share her concern over the fact that a significant number of people had not received their first dose yet.

The meeting decided a series of steps to make the vaccination campaign effective and that action would be taken against wedding halls, shopping malls and factories violating standard operating procedures (SOPs).

The meeting also decided that a door-to-door vaccination micro-plan would be made to vaccinate people, particularly housewives, at home for which lady health workers would be hired. The first phase of the drive would cover Karachi, Sukkur and Larkana and the second would cover Karachi again, Hyderabad and Shaheed Benazirabad.

In November, Umar and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan had sounded the alarm, saying that the arrival of the Omicron variant was inevitable and a matter of time.

Pakistan had subsequently placed a complete ban on Nov 27 on travel from six south African countries — South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, Botswana and Namibia — and Hong Kong in the wake of the variant's discovery.

This travel ban was later extended to nine more countries — Croatia, Hungary, Netherlands, Ukraine, Ireland, Slovenia, Vietnam, Poland and Zimbabwe.

Pakistan reports more than 3,000 new cases for second day

Pakistan has reported 3,571 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, up from 3,015 a day earlier, taking the country's tally to 1,315,834.

The national positivity rate has risen to 7.4 per cent.

The breakdown in the last 24 hours is as follows:
  • Sindh: 2,321 cases, 2 deaths
  • Punjab: 843 cases, 1 death
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 90 cases, 4 deaths
  • Balochistan: 7 cases
  • Islamabad: 299 cases
  • Gilgit-Baltistan: 4 cases
  • Azad Jammu and Kashmir: 7 cases

Pakistan reported another 4,286 coronavirus cases on January 14, the highest since August 25 when it recorded 4,553 infections, while the country's positivity ratio was recorded at 8.16% during the last 24 hours, also the highest since August 11.

Pakistan has been witnessing a fifth wave of the coronavirus with spread of the new Omicron variant. During the last 24 hours, 52,522 tests were conducted across the country.

So far, Pakistan has confirmed 1,320,120 cases out of which Sindh has reported 497,153, Punjab (451,408), KPK (182,100), and Balochistan has recorded 33,684 infections.

Overall, Islamabad has confirmed 110,597 infections, GB (10,439) and AJK has reported 34,739 positive cases. The death toll has risen to 29,003 after four people succumbed to the novel virus during the last 24 hours.

The recoveries from coronavirus have reached 1,263,005 after 2,598 more people recovered from the virus.

Meanwhile, the active number of cases have reached 28,112 while there are 709 critical cases.

On Friday, Pakistan decided to allow booster shots for children aged over 18 as authorities scramble to control the spread of the virus.

In a tweet, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) said that the age limit has been reduced and from Saturday (today) citizens over 18 years will be eligible for a free booster dose of their choice.

Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah convened a meeting of the Provincial Task Force on Saturday (today) over the rising Covid-19 cases across the province, especially Karachi. During the last 24 hours, the positivity ratio in the port city reached 35.30%.
