New Delhi: The Indian government is ready to launch a new program valued at 9,300 million dollars in order to build six new submarines in the country in association with foreign firms, today reported the press.
Official sources told The Times of India that the plan is part of a strategy to develop the national military industry and seek technology transfer.
After its beginning, this would be the first major program of the Ministry of Defense within the framework of the strategic partnership model approved by the Cabinet Committee on Security 10 days ago.
In recent years New Delhi has topped the list of the world's largest weapon buyers, a situation that authorities are aiming to limit in order to avoid economic bleeding.
According to the newspaper, the Indian companies Larsen and Toubro and Reliance Defense were chosen to participate in the P-75 I program, in collaboration with other foreign firms still to be selected.
Under the P-75 project India is already building six Khalvari-class submarines, derived from the French Scorpene, at Mazagon Dock Ltd, located in the western city of Mumbai.
The first of these submarines, INS Kalvari, was launched in October 2015, followed by INS Khanderi in January of this year.
Media reports recently revealed that Narendra Modi's government could acquire three more submarines of that type.
According to Indian military commanders, these ships are designed to operate in all scenes and have the necessary means and communications to ensure interoperability with other components of naval groups.
In 1992, India joined the select group of submarine builders by launching INS Shalki
