Mid-life upgrade for F22P

There is a space below the deck for the VLS plug, it is actually in the building plans.

I have seen F-22P personally, below is mess & operations room and there is not much space for VLS, if a VLS is installed then major structural changes will be needed, same was opinion of onboard crew.

The design allows for a plug it has been confirmed. it was in the design confirmed by one of the sword class captains.

I also read that interview which he gave at the time when first F-22P was going or was about to complete the sea trial before the induction.

I am trying to search that interview since yesterday but no success till now, anyone who have the link of that interview or is save in his archive plz post ....

Who confirmed it please share it here, as on duty were not in favor of such modification due space issue, and it will be big change so not easy and cheap.

The Capain of PNS Saif I think, interview with Jane's confirmed it. Look it up.

I trust what I get directly from PN staff on ship, its possible but not easy task so PN may not upgrade them with big SAM possible DK-10 type SAM may be installed.

Operating the Type 21 is getting prohibitively expensive. upgrading them is really cost ineffective. Moreover some of the weapons removed will be used in other upcoming projects. Remember, MRTP 33 are still devoid of missiles!

IMO, the Mk 141 launchers (from Type 21's) can't be reused on MRTP-33 FAC's, which require a single retractable Mk 140 lightweight canister launcher.

F22P could take the following upgrades:

1) New C4I system
2) New Surface / Air Search Radar
3) Secondary Nav Radar
4) New LPI Nav Radar
5) New Naval ESM System
6) New Naval Jammer
7) New EW / Acoustic Decoy System

However, it will be next to impossible to integrate western and Chinese systems. Hence, nothing will be done or any upgrades will only come from China. That is the unfortunate reality.

F-22P and Algeria's C28A corvettes have similar weapons suite, but the latter has been installed with Thales Smart-S Mk2 radar. Isn't the same possible with F-22P?

Agreed. LY-80N/HHQ-16 is a large missile, the VLS would go deeper below the elevated deck area and the number of cells may not exceed 8.

A better option would be Umkhonto sized missiles. Which would allow a 16 or 24 cell VLS.

Here's how ship designs, that are normally non-amenable to change, can still be upgraded: cut the ship into two, plugin the extension, and join everything back again. Done! Although, easier said than done :)

The area where the FM-90 is is sitting on a raised deck which is roughly 2 meters high (full size door give rough dimensions). This requires at least 4 more meters of space that needs to be found to place a vls. Removing the FM-90 and installing a VLS (Likely not more than 16 cells) would give 2x as many sams... Although ideally a quad pack sam.would be developed or acquired for use one PN ships. This would enable 64 missiles. Beyond this, ideally PN could change the type 730 ciws for ak630 (smaller footprint) and place a 21 cell FL-3000N. While this is unlikely, so PN could equip 6 hq10 missiles on each of the type 730., giving much needed missile support.

I think HHQ-16 SAM is 5 meter in length and the height of elevated deck seem approximately 4 or 5 meter

They will be stricken off of service list once Type 54A start coming into service. ADA will take time to construct. Two units Type 54A, as per my info., will join PN next year.

I for one would be sorry to see them go, some of the most handsome ships afloat!! Beautiful and sleek lines and when underway they look as if they are wolf hounds of the sea!!!
@Aamir Hussain.
Someone told me that upgrade of F21 was not without its problems and the hull had issues with attempts at modernization with cracks appearing in the hull and needed reinforcement. Apparently this happened to the British earlier while the Type 21s were in service with them. The type 21 is truely obsolete and needs to be liad to rest ASAP.

A couple of T-21's did develop cracks during the Falkland war, but due to the extensive use during the conflict and expansion of Steel & Aluminium structure. However, they were reinforced accordingly.

They were considerable modified by PN and have served well keeping in view the role for which they were initially built. They still serve well as a convoy escort FFG.

They will be replaced in the next 5 years.

If you look to the left side of the ladder, you will see the door i referred to earlier. Likely 6 ft in height. The deck is slightly taller than the door, so probably 2 - 2.5eters in height. The HQ-16 is a 5.5m missile so the entire vls height must be around 6m. I think there is probably room below deck and some above (the height of the FM90) is another 3m so im sure if the vls comes above the deck by 1m and you build up a structure around it for rcs reduction, a vls will fit.
